The exam is conducted in four stages-

A candidate must meet the following requirements to be eligible for examination-
Both men and women, who are citizens of India, can apply.
The age of the candidate must not exceed 35 years of age. Age relaxation of up to a maximum of five years is provided to candidates belonging to SC/ST.
The Educational Qualification for appearing in the Limited Departmental Competitive Examination will be a Graduation from a recognized University. It is an added benefit to possess an NCC “B” or “C” Certificate.
The candidate should have completed 04 years of regular service in the rank of Sub-Inspector (GD) or Inspector (GD) including basic training and should have a clean record of service till the issue of letter of appointment.
Candidates must pass the Physical Standards Test and Medical Standards Test. The details are described later in the article.
The written exam conducted by UPSC consists of two papers. Paper 1 consists of objective-type multiple-choice questions. The time allotted for examination is two and half hours.

Paper 2- Essay, Précis Writing, and Comprehension, is a descriptive examination. The examination lasts for two hours and bears 100 marks. The candidates are supposed to write essays in the medium allowed by the Commission. Candidates need to write Précis Writing and Comprehension in English Language only.

Part A: General Ability and Intelligence: This section of objective type questions will cover the following topics-
This section includes questions to test numerical ability, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, and data interpretation.
The questions are set to test the general awareness, scientific temper, comprehension, and appreciation of scientific phenomena of everyday observation including new areas of importance like Information Technology, Biotechnology, and Environmental Science.
The questions are asked to test candidates’ knowledge about the national and international issues related to culture, music, arts, literature, sports, governance, societal and developmental issues, industry, business, globalization, and interplay among nations.
The questions are aimed to test candidates’ general awareness and include questions from basic knowledge of the history of India, Indian and World Geography as well as Indian Polity and Economy.

The Interview/ Personality Test carries 200 marks. Those who pass all the previous stages are summoned for an Interview.
