Indian Coast Guard Entries

You can join the Indian Coast Guard in two ways. There are two types of ICG entries- Officers and Sailors.

Officer Entries

General Duty Branch-It is mandatory for every officer including GD branch officers to complete Naval Orientation Course at INA, Ezhimala for 22 weeks. It is followed by a 24 week afloat training and then a 16 week afloat training at Coast Guard ships in different locations. This is followed by a Seamanship Board exam. The qualified candidates are deputed for technical courses for 43 weeks in different training establishments. It is followed by a posting on CG ships for 6 weeks for the Watch Keeping certificate.

General Duty (P/N Branch)- After the Watchkeeping Certificate, the Pilot Branch Officers are called for Aviation Medicals in New Delhi. They are trained at Air Force Academy/ Civil Flying Academy for 6 months. Thereafter, they are divided into fixed and rotary wing branches where these pilots are deputed to Coast Guard Flying Training Squadron, Daman / Helicopter Training School (HTS), Rajali respectively. They are awarded “wings” after the successful completion of their training.

 Technical Branch- After completing the training at INA, Ezhimala, the Technical Branch Officers are deputed to INS Shivaji or INS Valsura for Engineering/ Electrical branches specialization course. The training lasts for 105-110 weeks, followed by 6 months of training at Coast Guard ship for Watch Keeping Certificate. After the completion, they are deputed for staff appointments.

Short Service Appointment (Women)- After completing the training at INA, Ezhimala, the short service women officers are deputed for several technical courses at Coast Guard or Naval Training establishments. Their training lasts for 70 weeks which is completed in three phases.

Short Service Appointment (CPL Holders)- The CPL holder Officers are deputed for Technical CG courses after completing their training at INA, Ezhimala. The Stream Distribution takes place and officers are deputed to CG Flying Training Squadron, Daman /Helicopter Training School (HTS), Rajali for Dornier/Helicopter training respectively for 6 months.

Sailors

Navik (General Duty)- Navik (GD) are 12the qualified candidates who are trained for 24 weeks at INS, Chilka. Then they are deputed for afloat training for 3 months, ready for cadre training afterward. The cadre training lasts for 4-6 months depending upon the cadre.

Yantrik- Yantrik are diploma holder candidates who are trained at INS, Chilka for 9 weeks. The 3 months afloat training takes place at CG ships afterward, followed by Technical training at INS Shivaji / INS Valsura/NIAT (Naval Institute of Aviation Technology) / ShipWright School for 90-100 weeks training depending upon the branch.

Navik (Domestic Branch)- The Naviks (DB) undergo 15 weeks of training at INS Chilka followed by 03 months afloat training and approximately 06 months the branch training at INS Hamla at Mumbai.

Indian Coast Guard Eligibility Criteria

A candidate must fulfill the below-mentioned criteria for Sailor post.

Age

Navik (GD)- 18 to 22 years

Navik (DB)- 18 to 22 years

Educational Qualification

Navik (GD)- 10+2 passed with Maths and Physics from a recognized education board.

Navik (DB)-10+2 passed from a recognized education board.

Indian Coast Guard Recruitment Process

The candidates are shortlisted based on the marks obtained in the 10+2 exams. The applications are sorted center wise and the cut-off for every center is also different. The shortlisted candidates are required to appear in a written examination.

Written Examination

The written examination is an offline examination that contains multiple-choice questions. The questions asked are of the 12^th standard level. There are four subjects in the exam- English, Mathematics and Quantitative Aptitude, Physics, Chemistry, General Knowledge, and Reasoning.

The candidates are required to carry certain documents to the examination center. If any candidate fails to present the documents, he/she will not be eligible to sit in the examination.

Indian Coast Guard Exam Pattern

The paper consists of 120 questions, with 1 mark for each question. There is no negative marking. The questions are to be solved in 90 minutes.

Indian Coast Guard Physical Fitness Test

The candidates who qualify for written tests are called for the Physical Fitness Test which lasts for two days. The following are the parameters for PFT-

• 6 Km run to be completed in 7 minutes
• 20 Squat ups
• 10 Push-ups

Physically challenged candidates are not allowed in PFT exams.

Medical Examinations

At the last stage, a medical examination of the shortlisted candidates is conducted by military doctors. The parameters for Medical examination are listed below-

• Height- minimum 157 cms.
• Chest- in proportion with height, minimum expansion of 5 cms.
• Weight- in proportion with height.
• Normal hearing
• No tattoos allowed on any part of the body
• Visual Standard- Better eye- 6/6, Worst eye- 6/9. No glasses allowed.
