CDS Eligibility

Before you apply for the CDS exam, you must see if you fall into the eligibility criteria or not. UPSC mentions the eligibility details in its notification and the candidate is also required to understand the following points regarding CDS as well as NDA eligibility.

  • The candidate must ensure that he/she fulfills the eligibility criteria before filling the application form. Mere issue of admission certificate does not in itself imply that the Commission has cleared his/her candidature.
  • The commission has the right to reject the candidature at any stage of the process if it finds that the eligibility criteria are not fulfilled by the candidate.
  • The verification of the documents takes place only after the candidate has passed the exam as well as the SSB interview.
  • A candidate who needs to present a certificate of eligibility may appear in the exam but he must produce the aforesaid certificate before the declaration of the result by UPSC.
  • If a candidate is found guilty to produce wrong documents, he/ she can be removed from service.

Conditions Of Eligibility

A candidate must fulfill all the given conditions in order to be eligible for the CDS exam.

Nationality

The candidate must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal, a person of Indian origin migrated from Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Burma, East African countries of Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania, Malawi, Zaire, Zambia, Ethiopia, and Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

A certificate of eligibility is required for every candidate mentioned above except the one who is a citizen of India.

Age Limit, Marital Status, and Gender

For IMA- Unmarried males, born not earlier than 2nd January 1998 and not later than 1st January 2003.

For Indian Naval Academy- Unmarried males, born not earlier than 2nd January 1998 and not later than 1st January 2003.

For Air Force Academy- 20-24 years as on 1st January 2022 i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January 1998 and not later than 1st January 2002 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable up to 26 yrs. i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2002 only are eligible.

Note- Candidates below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Those married and above 25 years of age are also eligible but will not be provided any accommodation for family nor can they live outside the premises with their family.

For OTA, (SSC Course for men)- Unmarried males, born not earlier than 2nd January, 1997 and not later than 1st January, 2003 only are eligible. Male divorcee/ widower candidates are not to be treated as unmarried.

For OTA, )SSC Course for women)- Unmarried females, born not earlier than 2nd January, 1997 and not later than 1st January, 2003. Issueless divorcees and issueless widows who have not remarried are also eligible.

Educational Qualification

The minimum educational qualification for admission in these institutes is a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university.

Note- Candidates with Air Force/ Navy/Army as the first choice in their application are required to submit a proof of graduation/ provisional certificate on the first day of SSB Interview.

Candidates pursuing the final year of graduation can also apply, provided that they do not have any backlog as of the date of application. They also need to submit proof of passing the examination at the time of commencement of the course.

Physical And Medical Standards

UPSC has a specific guideline for the required physical and mental fitness of the candidates. This guideline also mentions certain grounds and medical conditions or diseases which can get you disqualified.

Note- Permanent body tattoos on any part of the body except the inner side of the forearm, from elbow to wrist, and on the reverse side of the palm/ back of the hand are not allowed.

Height and Weight Standards

Height and Weight standards vary as per the stream. The minimum acceptable height for women is 152 cms. And for males, it is 157.5 cms, (162.5 cms for Air Force and 157 cms for Navy)

Relaxation in height of 5 cms is allowed for Gorkhas and candidates from the North-eastern hilly region, Garhwali, and Kumaon.

A relaxation of 2 cms is also provided for candidates from Lakshadweep.

NDA Eligibility Criteria

Conditions of Eligibility

A candidate is required to fulfill all of the mentioned conditions.

The date of birth must match the date of birth as mentioned in the matriculation/ 12th certificate. After the result declaration of the exam, the candidates are required to submit the age of proof.

 Marriage is prohibited until the completion of the training. A candidate who marries after the result declaration shall not be eligible for training. If the candidate marries during the training, he shall be discharged and will be required to compensate any amount incurred on him by the govt during the training.

Educational Qualification

A candidate is required to pass a minimum 12th Board examination to apply for NDA/NA exam.

For Army Wing of NDA12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent examination conducted by a State Education Board or a University.
For Air Force and Naval Wings of NDA & for the 10+2 Cadet Entry Scheme at the Indian Naval Academy12th Class pass of the 10+2 pattern of School Education or equivalent with Physics and Mathematics conducted by a State Education Board or a University.  

Note- Candidates who are appearing in the 12th Board examination can also apply.

Physical Standards

The candidates must be physically and mentally fit as per the guidelines issued by UPSC in the official NDA/NA notification. The height and weight standards, vision standards, are different for Army, Navy, and Air Force. The candidates are advised to go through the official notification for details.

AFCAT Eligibility Criteria

AirForce Commission Admission Test exam is the entrance examination conducted by Indian Air Force for Permanent Commission as well as Short Service Commission in Indian Air Force for Flying Branch as well as Ground duty (both technical and non-technical).

Candidates applying for AFCAT must ensure that they read the official notification carefully before applying and fall under the eligibility criteria. IAF has the right to cancel the candidature at any stage of the process if any discrepancy regarding eligibility is found.

Ground Duty (Technical/ Non-technical Branches)- 20 to 26 years as on 01 January 2022 i.e. born between 02 January 1996 to 01 January 2002 (both dates inclusive).

Note- Only the unmarried candidates below the age of 25 are eligible. Widows/ widowers and divorcees (with or without encumbrances) are not eligible.
