SSC Stenographer is all India Open Competitive Examination for recruitment to the posts of Stenographer Grade “C” (Group “B” Non-Gazetted) and Stenographer Grade “D” (Group “C” Non-Gazetted).


Total Number of Vacancy for Grade “C” Stenographer is: 505.

Total Number of Vacancy for Grade “D” Stenographer is: 696.


Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Stenographers (Grade C & D) Examination Eligibility Criteria is mentioned here.

Educational Qualification- Aspirants must have completed 12th Standard or equivalent degree from a recognized Board or University. Candidates who are able to prove by documentary evidence that result of the exam was released on or before the date of cut-off and he/she has been passed, will also be considered to have the required Educational Qualification.

Age Limit- The age of applicants should be between 18 to 27 years old as on 1.8.2018. (Applicants born not before the date of 2nd August 1990 and not later than 1st August 1999). Relaxation in age will be offered as per government rules and regulation

  • The written examination will have objective type question.
  • The questions will be set also in Hindi for only Part 1 & Part 2.
  • There will be negative marking of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer.

  • Written Examination: The Paper will have objective type questions.
  • Skill Test: The candidates who qualify the written examination will be called for typing test.


Candidates who qualify in the written examination will have to appear for the stenography test. Candidates will be given one dictation for 10 minutes in English/Hindi with the speed of 100 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade “C” and 80 w.p.m. for the post of Stenographer Grade “D”. The matter will have to be transcribed on the computer only. The transcription time is as follows:

  • For Stenographer Grade “D” – 50 minutes (English); 65 minutes (Hindi)
  • For Stenographer Grade “C” – 40 minutes (English); 55 minutes (Hindi)


Grade “C” Salary and Allowances: Pay Scale- 9300-34800/ Grade pay-4200/ Initial Pay-5200/ total Pay- 14500.

Grade “D” Salary and Allowances: Pay Scale- 5200-20200/ Grade pay-2400/ Initial Pay-5200/ total Pay- 7600.


For General and Other Category: Rs 100/-

For SC/ST/PWD/ Women/ ESM candidates: Nil


Part 1: General Intelligence & Reasoning

It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. The test will include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discriminating observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning, verbal and figure classification, arithmetical number series, non-verbal series etc. The test will also include questions designed to test the candidate’s abilities to deal with abstract ideas and symbols and their relationship, arithmetical computation and other analytical functions.

Part 2: General Awareness

Questions will be designed to test the ability of the candidate’s general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of an educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its Neighbouring countries especially pertaining to Sports, History, Culture, Geography, Economic scene, General Polity including Indian Constitution, and Scientific Research etc.

Part 3: English Language & Comprehension

In addition to the testing of candidates’ understanding of the English, its vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, synonyms, antonyms and its correct usage, etc. his/her writing ability, would also be tested.


Before the commencement of the SSC Stenographer 2019 Exam, SSC will be releasing SSC Stenographer Admit Card for the Tier-I exam. Candidates will be able to download SSC Stenographer Call Letter from the official Website of SSC once the Admit Card has been released by the Staff Selection Commission of India.


After the completion of exams, the Staff Selection Commission of India (SSCStenographer) will announce the result through the official website of SSC.
