Indian Air Force invites applications from unmarried male candidates (Indian/ Nepalese) for selection test for intake 01/2024 to join as airmen in Group X Trades (except Education Instructor Trade) and Group Y Trades (Except Indian Air Force (Security) and Musician Trades). The exam is conducted twice a year- in March and in September. The notification for the March exams has been released by IAF. Only online applications are accepted. The exam will be conducted between 20th & 21st February 2024.
Group X examination is a technical branch exam and the Group Y exam is for the non-technical position. The examinations are conducted for recruitment on the position below officer rank. Candidates who clear the Group X exam, deal with aircraft systems, ground systems, etc while the candidates who clear the Group Y exam work in departments like accounts, logistics, etc. For young male candidates, it is a great opportunity to join as Airmen in Indian Air Force. The Air Force X & Y Group examination takes place in three phases. Online test for candidates opting for both group ‘X’ & ‘Y’ shall be conducted in one sitting, on the same system
Group ‘X’ Trades (Except Education Instructor)- The test comprises objective type questions from English, Mathematics, and Physics as per CBSE 10+2 syllabus. The exam timing is 60 minutes.
Group ‘Y’ Trades [Except IAF(S) and Musician]- The test comprises objective type questions from English as per CBSE 10+2 syllabus and Reasoning and General Awareness. The exam timing is 45 minutes.
Both Group ‘X’ & ‘Y’ Trades- The test comprises objective type questions from English, Mathematics, and Physics as per CBSE 10+2 syllabus and Reasoning and General Awareness. The exam timing is 85 minutes.
Marking Pattern
(i) One mark for every correct answer.
(ii) Nil (0) marks for questions not attempted.
(iii) Deduction of 0.25 marks for each wrong answer
Candidates shortlisted in Phase-I are required to download new admit cards and reach designated Airmen Selection Centre with required documents. The eligibility of candidates is verified at the centre. Candidates must refer to the official notification by IAF for details of required documents. The eligible candidates are sent for the Physical Fitness test. It comprises 1.6 Km run to be completed within 06 minutes 30 seconds, 10 Push-ups, 10 Sit-ups and 20 Squats within the stipulated time to qualify in the Physical Fitness Test.

Adaptability Test I- Those who pass the Physical Fitness Test are then sent for the Adaptability test to check whether the candidate can cope with varied geographical terrain, weather, and operational conditions.
Adaptability Test II- This test is conducted to check whether the candidate can cope with the environment of Indian Air Force and military way of life. Only those who pass the adaptability test I are sent for Adaptability test II.
Phase III is a medical examination. Only candidates who have passed Adaptability Test II are sent the appointment letters to appear for the Medical examination test at specified Airmen Selection Centre. The medical test details can be referred to from the official notification.
Training- Initially, candidates shall be sent for a Joint Basic Phase Training (JBPT)] at any of the Training Institute i.e., Basic Training Institute [Belagavi (Karnataka)]s, No. 2 ATS (Naliya) and ‘B’ Flight of MTTI (Avadi) or a station as decided by the Air HQs. If the trainee fails to achieve the required standards in academics, profession, physical fitness and discipline or is found to be medically unfit, training can be terminated at any time.
Group ‘X’ Trades (Except Education Instructor Trade)- Rs. 33,000 per month plus Dearness Allowance (as applicable). The pay may rise as per career growth in subsequent years.
Group ‘Y’ [Except IAF(S) and Musician Trades]- Rs. 26,900/- per month plus Dearness allowance (as applicable). The pay may rise as per career growth in subsequent years.
